How it works in class

  1. Open the timer and pick a mode: Countdown, Stopwatch or Pomodoro.
  2. Set the time, or tap a preset: 1, 3, 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes, or the classroom presets Think (1 minute), Pair (2), Share (3), Discussion (10), Brain break (5) and Exam section (45).
  3. Press Start, or the space bar. When the countdown reaches zero, the timer chimes and the screen flashes.

Ideas for your lesson

  • Run think-pair-share with the Think, Pair and Share presets one after another.
  • Time a 45-minute exam section in Ambient mode, so only the digits show.
  • Use the stopwatch with laps to time reading-aloud or speaking turns.
  • Set Pomodoro to 20 minutes of focus and 5 of break for independent study.
  • Give the class a 3-minute countdown to tidy up before the bell.

Why teachers use it

  • It is free, and this link opens without an account.
  • Full screen and Ambient mode (dark background, very large digits, buttons hidden) are easy to read from the back of the room.
  • The chime is made by the browser itself, so there is no sound file to load.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Classroom Timer free?

Yes. It is marked Free in the ABC toolbox, and this link opens it in your browser with no sign-up.

Can I pause the countdown?

Yes. Start turns into Pause while the timer runs, then Resume. The space bar does the same.

What does Ambient mode do?

It hides the buttons and presets and shows very large digits on a dark background, which works well during an exam.

How does the Pomodoro mode work?

Set the focus and break lengths (25 and 5 minutes to start with). The timer switches between them, chimes at each change and counts the sessions.
