How it works

  1. Open the trainer. Each twister names the sounds it trains, for example /sh/ and /s/, or /r/ and /l/.
  2. Press Start clean run, say the twister as many times as the level asks, three at level 1 and up to eight at level 6, and press Stop.
  3. The time is shown and you move up a level. You judge whether the run was clean; the timer does not listen.
  4. In Chrome or Edge, Record and check listens once through the browser’s speech recognition and shows what it heard with a percentage. 80% or more counts as clear.
  5. Next twister moves on and starts again at level 1.

Ideas for your lesson

  • Pick the twister for the sound your class finds hardest.
  • Warm-up race: pairs time each other on the board.
  • Self-study: learners use the speech check at home and try to reach level 6.

Good to know

  • Seven twisters, aimed at /sh/ and /s/, /p/, /w/, /f/ and /th/, /r/ and /l/, /b/, and /t/ with /tw/.
  • Nothing is recorded or saved. The speech check uses the browser’s own speech recognition in British English, and some browsers process that speech on their maker’s servers.
  • Anonymous usage counts go to Plausible analytics.
  • It needs only www.abcwebsites.online.
