How it works

  1. Open the quiz and press Start the quiz.
  2. Answer 24 multiple-choice questions, four at each level from A1 to C2. They run from the easiest level to the hardest; the questions inside each level and the answer options are shuffled every time.
  3. The result shows an estimated level with its name, from Breakthrough (A1) to Mastery (C2), a short tip on what to study next and a breakdown of correct answers per level.

How the level is worked out

A level counts as passed when at least three of its four questions are right and every level below it was passed too. The highest level passed is the estimate. It is an indicator for placement, not an official exam, and it tests grammar and vocabulary only: there is no listening, speaking or writing section.

Ideas for your lesson

  • Give it to a new learner before the first lesson, so you can choose material at the right level.
  • Run it at the start of a course and again at the end, and compare the breakdowns.
  • Once you know the level, plan the lesson at that level with the AI lesson plan generator.

Good to know

  • Results are not saved or sent anywhere: note the level before closing the tab. Retake starts again.
  • There is no timer. Most people finish in a few minutes.
  • It needs only www.abcwebsites.online, so it usually opens on school networks.
  • Learners who want a placement test linked to one-to-one lessons can also take the English placement test on ABC English Online.
